The Revolution's last regular-season game at Gillette Stadium comes against the team sitting right above them in the East, with Lionel Messi chasing a scoring record on the other bench. New England vs Inter Miami on Sunday, November 1 is the penultimate round of the 2026 MLS regular season, and both clubs have already clinched playoff spots. What's left to settle is seeding, and possibly some history.

New England Revolution
Inter MiamiWhat's actually at stake?
Seeding and home field. Through the games of October 17, Nashville SC were running away with the East on 67 points, Inter Miami were second on 55 (15-5-10, +22) and New England third on 52 (16-10-4, +8). Chicago, on 48, and Charlotte, on 47, aren't far back.
That gap matters because of how the playoffs work this year. Seeds 1 through 7 in each conference go straight into a best-of-three Round One, which runs November 20 to December 2, and the higher seed gets more home games. Seeds 8 and 9 play a one-off Wild Card on November 18. Decision Day is Saturday, November 7, when Miami host Charlotte, so whatever happens in Foxborough leaves one more swing for both teams.
Miami have two games before this one (at the Red Bulls, then home to Cincinnati), so the numbers will move. A Revs win could still flip second and third.
Can Messi break Carlos Vela's record here?
He's close. His two goals in the 3-1 win at Atlanta on October 17 took him to 25 league goals, six clear in the Golden Boot race, and his 15th assist tied him with LAFC's Son Heung-min for the league lead. He's also the first player in MLS history with 15 assists in three straight seasons.
That's 40 goal contributions. Vela's single-season record, set with LAFC in 2019, is 49. With four games left after Atlanta, Messi needed nine more, which is a lot even for him. Whether the Gillette game becomes a record night depends on what he does against the Red Bulls and Cincinnati first.

The supporting cast has changed. Germán Berterame scored his ninth goal in 26 MLS appearances at Atlanta, set up by Messi and Luis Suárez. Rodrigo De Paul is a permanent signing now, and Dayne St. Clair is in goal. Miami have also been through three coaches this year: Javier Mascherano left in April, Guillermo Hoyos took over as interim, and Cristian "Kily" González, who played alongside Messi for Argentina, started on September 15. After one win in six games in September, Miami won three in a row to open October.
How did the Revs get here?
Marko Mitrović, in his first season as an MLS head coach, rebuilt the squad and has New England back in the playoffs for the first time since 2023. They clinched with a 3-2 win at Cincinnati on October 14, then beat Chicago 1-0 at home three days later in front of a season-high 34,506.
Carles Gil is still the engine. The captain and 2021 MVP had 12 goals and 10 assists going into the Chicago game, became only the second player in league history with double-digit assists in six straight seasons, and then set up Matt Polster's winner. Dor Turgeman (9 goals, 7 assists as of mid-October) leads the line, homegrown winger Peyton Miller has made his USMNT debut, and Jack Harrison came back to MLS this summer in a Designated Player slot. Behind them, Mamadou Fofana anchors the center of defense and Matt Turner, on an extended loan, had six clean sheets after shutting out Chicago.
What happened the first time they met?
A 1-1 draw in South Florida in late April. Gil scored for New England in the 56th minute and Berterame equalized in the 76th. Gillette has been kinder to the Revs: as of mid-September they had eight home wins and 26 home points, among the five best home records in the league.
New England Revolution
Inter MiamiWho wins?
I keep going back and forth. Miami have a +22 goal difference, Suárez and Berterame up front, and a Messi in this kind of form is hard to plan for. But New England are tough at home, Turner is in form, and Gil doesn't need many chances to hurt you. I'll take a 2-2, with Messi scoring and the seeding question pushed to Decision Day. If Miami's back line has an off night, the Revs can win this.
