Two points in it: Martín and Márquez take the MotoGP title fight to Sepang

DAMITV Sports Desk · 19 October 2026 · 4 min read

Two points. That was the gap between Jorge Martín and Marc Márquez as the paddock packed up for Phillip Island, and it's why the Malaysian MotoGP 2026 matters so much. Sepang hosts the 19th round from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November, and it opens the last run of four races in five weekends: Malaysia, Qatar a week later, then Portugal and Valencia in late November. Whatever happens in Australia, this title is going to be decided in the heat.

The Grand Prix itself starts at 3pm local time on Sunday, which is 07:00 in the UK and 2am Eastern in the US (the clocks go back overnight in America, so check yours).

The Sepang timetable

Malaysia is eight hours ahead of the UK, which now sits on GMT. That means most of the action lands in the British early morning.

Further afield, the Sunday race is 12:30 in India and 6pm in Sydney. In the US the Saturday sprint is at 3am ET and Sunday's race at 2am ET, 11pm PT on the Saturday night. The official MotoGP calendar will have any late changes.

Where to watch the Malaysian MotoGP 2026

TNT Sports carries MotoGP in the UK this season, and you can get it through Sky, Virgin Media or EE as well as through the HBO Max app. In the US, Fox Sports has the sprint on FS1 and the race on FS2. MotoGP's own VideoPass shows every session live in most countries. Elsewhere, check your local listings.

Or use DAMITV. Our MotoGP streams page has every session from Sepang free in HD, and you don't need to sign up. It's a good weekend to have it bookmarked, because Formula 1 is in Mexico City on the same Sunday: the F1 streams hub covers that race, and our Mexico City Grand Prix guide has the times. Start with MotoGP over breakfast, finish with F1 in the evening.

Where the title fight stands

Going into Phillip Island the top of the table read:

  1. Jorge Martín (Aprilia Racing), 355 points
  2. Marc Márquez (Ducati Lenovo), 353
  3. Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing), 309
  4. Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia), 259
  5. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM), 258

The odd thing about that table is how Martín got to the top. He has won only one Grand Prix this year, plus four sprints. Márquez, the reigning champion, has six Grand Prix wins and eight sprint wins, and is still behind. Martín has banked points almost everywhere, and the Aprilia has kept getting stronger: at Mandalika, Aprilia locked out the top four places, something no manufacturer had ever done in MotoGP. That result also put Aprilia ahead of Ducati in the constructors' standings.

Bezzecchi is the outsider who won't go away. He has five Grand Prix wins, won again at Mandalika and has been on the podium in five of the last six races. He's 46 behind his teammate, which is a lot with five rounds left, but a Sepang win plus a bad day for both leaders would change the mood completely.

Further back, Gresini have a problem: Fermín Aldeguer hurt his hand in Lombok and is out of the Australian round, with Iker Lecuona riding in his place. Whether he's fit for Sepang is still to be confirmed. His teammate Álex Márquez won here last year, which is worth remembering when people only talk about the top two.

Sepang, briefly

The circuit is 5.54km long with two huge straights, the longest at 920 metres, either side of the hairpin at the end of the lap. It rewards a bike that drives hard out of slow corners, and it punishes tyres in the tropical heat, so the race often swings late. The crowd is huge too: last year's event drew a record 190,977 fans.

Who I'd back at Sepang

My feeling is that the long, hot Sepang race suits Márquez's experience, and he needs a big weekend more than Martín does. I'll take Márquez to win the Malaysian MotoGP 2026 Grand Prix, with Martín somewhere on the podium and the championship gap still small enough to fit on a postage stamp going into Qatar. For the sprint I'd also lean Márquez, who has won eight of them this year; Bezzecchi, oddly, hasn't won one. A wet Saturday would throw all of that out.
