How Freiburg got to the top
Five games, four wins, one draw, 14 goals scored and four conceded. Freiburg went into the October international break top on 13 points, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, with Bayern third on 11.
They opened with a 4-1 win over Werder Bremen, Yuito Suzuki scoring a hat-trick, then beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-0 at home. A 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt followed, and on 11 October they edged Schalke 2-1, Keisuke Gotō scoring the winner five minutes from time.
Suzuki has four goals, Igor Matanović and Maximilian Eggestein three each, and Yannik Engelhardt two. Freiburg have never had the budget for a 25-goal striker, so they get goals from everyone.
Freiburg
Bayern MunichTwo 2-0 leads, two defeats
In November 2025 at the Allianz Arena, Suzuki and Johan Manzambi had Freiburg 2-0 up inside 17 minutes. Bayern won 6-2.
The return game in Freiburg on 4 April 2026 hurt more. Manzambi scored just after half-time and Lucas Höler made it 2-0 in the 71st minute. Then Tom Bischof scored twice, the second in the 92nd minute, and Lennart Karl won it 3-2 deep into stoppage time. I suspect a fair few Freiburg fans still haven't watched the highlights.
The good memory is older. On 4 April 2023 Freiburg won 2-1 at the Allianz Arena in a DFB-Pokal quarter-final, Höler scoring a late penalty to knock Bayern out.
Schuster's rebuilt squad
Manzambi, who scored in both league games against Bayern last season, was sold to Aston Villa, and Merlin Röhl joined Everton. Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu went on loan to Frankfurt, so Mio Backhaus came in from Werder Bremen. Engelhardt arrived from Como and Gotō from Anderlecht.
Julian Schuster, the former club captain who succeeded Christian Streich in 2024, has kept the same identity: organised, hard-working and quick to attack the space once they win the ball. Freiburg are in the Conference League this season, so depth matters more than usual. They also visit Bayer Leverkusen on 18 October, which is a stiff game to have the week before.
What Bayern bring
Vincent Kompany's side won the league with 89 points last season and added the DFB-Pokal. This season has been good, if not perfect. They beat Stuttgart 5-1 and Union Berlin 7-0, then drew 0-0 at Schalke and 2-2 at Augsburg on 10 October.
Michael Olise has been their sharpest player, with eight goals in all competitions by early October, and Harry Kane is still Harry Kane. Nathaniel Brown, signed from Frankfurt for a reported €55m, has settled in quickly.
The calendar might help Freiburg. Bayern host RB Leipzig on 17 October and Arsenal in the Champions League on 21 October, four days before this trip, and Der Klassiker against Dortmund follows on 31 October. Kompany will have to rotate somewhere.
How Freiburg vs Bayern Munich could go
Bayern will have most of the ball, so Freiburg's routes are set pieces and transitions, with a home crowd of around 34,700 behind them. They've already shown they can get two goals up against this side. Both times last season the game turned once Bayern's substitutes came on, so it comes down to whether Freiburg still have the legs and the shape for the last 20 minutes.
I'd love Freiburg to do it, but I can't quite pick them. Bayern's bench changes games even after a Champions League night, and I'll go 2-1 to Bayern after another nervy afternoon.
