Canelo the challenger: can a 36-year-old take the WBC belt from unbeaten Christian Mbilli?

Canelo vs Mbilli fight poster for the WBC super middleweight title in Riyadh

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has spent most of the last fifteen years as the man other fighters had to beat. On Halloween night in Riyadh he walks to the ring as the challenger. Canelo vs Mbilli is for the WBC super middleweight title, the belt now held by Christian Mbilli, an unbeaten 31-year-old who has said out loud what plenty of people in boxing have been thinking: that Canelo is getting old.

It's a strange position for Canelo to be in, and it's the reason this fight is more interesting than the matchup looked on paper back in the spring.

A year away, and an elbow to prove

The last time we saw Canelo, he was losing. Terence Crawford beat him on a unanimous decision at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on 13 September 2025, and with it went the undisputed super middleweight crown Canelo had held for years. A month later he had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow.

Since then the comeback has wobbled. Turki Alalshikh first announced this fight for 12 September in Riyadh. Canelo then pushed it back to 31 October, citing a family matter and saying he "wasn't ready" and wanted a pre-camp before the real camp. He moved his training to Gandía in Spain, brought in outside conditioning help (reports say from Oleksandr Usyk's team), and left the boxing side, as always, to Eddy Reynoso.

He has also been unusually candid about the Crawford loss. He says he has watched it several times, thinks it was very close, and blames cramps in his legs as well as Crawford's game plan. He'd take a rematch. That's not something a fighter says if he thinks he's finished, and he insists the elbow now lets him throw the left hand the way he wants.

Still, he is 36, he has had 68 professional fights, and he will have gone more than thirteen months between them. That's the doubt Mbilli's whole camp is built on.

Who is Christian Mbilli?

If you only watch the big pay-per-views, you may know Mbilli as "the guy on the Crawford undercard". He is better than that.

A Cameroon-born Frenchman based in Montreal with Eye of the Tiger Management and trainer Marc Ramsay, Mbilli is 29-0-1 with 24 knockouts. He is a pressure fighter in the plainest sense: he walks forward, throws a lot and makes opponents work every round. He won the WBC interim title in June 2025 by flattening Maciej Sulecki in the first round, and the WBC later elevated him to full champion. This is his first defence.

The one blemish is instructive. On that same Crawford-Canelo night in September 2025, Mbilli drew with Lester Martinez over ten rounds, a split draw scored 96-94 Mbilli, 97-93 Martinez and 95-95. Martinez matched his work rate, and Mbilli suddenly looked ordinary. Canelo has noticed: he has called Mbilli "too simple", while also describing him to The Ring as "a champion and a very aggressive fighter".

Mbilli, for his part, hasn't been shy. "Canelo is getting old. It's a good time for me to fight him," he said in February. In June he told DAZN he wants to "destroy" him physically. More recently he said he plans to "bring the Mexican style", which is a bold thing to say to a Mexican superstar on a card billed as Mexico vs. The World.

Neither man has ever been stopped, which tells you something about how both of them are built.

How the fight probably goes

Styles first. Canelo is a counterpuncher who has made a living out of punishing busy opponents, timing them as they come in and digging hooks to the body. Mbilli is exactly the kind of fighter he has beaten for two decades. On that logic alone, this is a good matchup for Canelo.

The catch is the Crawford fight. Canelo's output was low that night, and those are the things that get worse at 36, not better. If his legs go in the middle rounds again, a fighter who throws as much as Mbilli will steal rounds simply by being busier. The draw with Martinez showed Mbilli can be frustrated; the question is whether Canelo still has the engine to frustrate him for twelve rounds.

My guess is that the early rounds belong to Canelo. Mbilli will come straight at him, and Canelo's timing and body work should land cleanly. The real fight starts around round six.

The rest of the Riyadh card

This is a ten-fight card, and the Mexican theme runs right through it. Jaime Munguia, the WBA super middleweight champion, defends against unbeaten Russian Nikita Zon. Rafael Espinoza puts his WBO featherweight title on the line against mandatory challenger Lorenzo Parra. Lindolfo Delgado meets Arthur Biyarslanov for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title. That's three more world title fights before the main event, and if Munguia wins, the super middleweight picture gets interesting very quickly.

There was some nervousness about the location earlier in the autumn, with reports of regional conflict raising questions over whether the event would stay in Saudi Arabia. Organisers have confirmed it stays in Riyadh.

Watching from wherever you are

DAZN has the whole Canelo vs Mbilli card on pay-per-view; in the UK it is also included for DAZN Ultimate subscribers. The DAZN fight-week page has the official ring-walk times and the full card. If you'd rather not pay, our free boxing streams page will carry the card in HD with no sign-up, and Spanish-speaking viewers can follow it on boxeo en vivo.

It is a busy Saturday night for fight fans. Over in Las Vegas the UFC has Renato Moicano against Tom Nolan at roughly the same hour, and we've written up that card in our Moicano vs Nolan preview, with the UFC streams hub covering it live.

Our pick

I keep going back and forth on Canelo vs Mbilli. The Canelo of three years ago beats Mbilli comfortably, probably inside the distance, because Mbilli's habit of walking straight in is what Canelo feeds on. But that version of Canelo didn't look present against Crawford, and an elbow operation plus a long layoff doesn't usually bring it back. I'll take Canelo on points, with the early body work doing the damage and Mbilli finishing stronger than the scorecards suggest. If Canelo looks slow in the first three rounds, though, this could be the night the challenger becomes the old man in the room.
